- Is medical weight loss treatment legal?
- Yes, with a prescription. These are prescription medicines rather than something bought over a counter, so a licensed prescriber has to be involved. What varies by state is who may prescribe, whether the relationship can be formed over video, and what has to be documented first — each state page below carries that state's own rules with a citation.
- Can you start a weight loss programme online?
- In some states the prescriber-patient relationship can be formed by telehealth without a prior in-person visit, provided the clinician meets the same standard of care they would in person. This is exactly the sort of rule that differs state to state, so we do not state one national answer — see the state page for the rules that apply where you are.
- Is compounded weight loss medication allowed?
- Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are in an unsettled position nationally, and this is a federal question rather than a Texas one. FDA records that tirzepatide and semaglutide do not currently appear on the 503B bulks list or on FDA's drug shortage list, and that for a state-licensed pharmacy or physician compounding under section 503A the period of enforcement discretion has ended; the district court denied the plaintiffs' preliminary injunction in Outsourcing Facilities Association v. FDA, 4:25-cv-00174 (N.D. Tex.) on 24 April 2025. Separately, FDA proposed on 30 April 2026 to exclude semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide from the 503B bulks list; the comment period has closed and no final rule has issued. THIS POSITION IS UNDER REVIEW AND MAY CHANGE. Checked 2026-07-27.
